This week in the newsroom: what GPT-5.6 Sol actually changes for a production system, and what it does not.
OpenAI’s quality-first model in the GPT-5.6 family brings million-token context, stronger tool use, and reasoning you can turn up or down by task. The gpt-5.6 API alias currently routes to it.
The useful change is not a smarter chatbot. More of a real workflow (search, inspect a file, call a tool, return a structured answer) can happen in one process instead of a relay of brittle handoffs.
It still does not give the workflow an owner, permissions, or an evaluation set. Paying Sol rates for classification or routine rewrite is how the promotional pricing evaporates. Route hard work to Sol. Route ordinary work to a smaller model.
